  • Job Summary

    The Commercial Underwriter must deliver high quality service to agents and agencies consistent with the quality of the risk and company strategy. 

    Essential Functions

    • Produce business in assigned territories within authority level and company guidelines
    • Prepare quotations, binders and related support documents within authority level assigned and company guidelines.
    • Service the correct technical data on a risk to underwrite a risk.
    • Reject risks that are not acceptable within authority levels established
    • Secure tentative and permanent rates from ISO on specifically rated risk
    • Follow up for any outstanding information needed to complete the underwriting file
    • Order and review inspections, send value letters and recommendation letters to agent and follow up
    • Rate and approve endorsements within authority and company guidelines
    • Respond to agent request for coverage on a timely basis
    • Approve and request reinstatements within authority level
    • Request Do Not Renew and Special Do Not Renew on accounts that need them with Commercial Manager approval
    • Send guidelines, prohibited list and forms to agents when requested
    • Update binder and renewal logs
    • Request new business cancellations when requested information is not received
    • Document file on all transactions
    • Process rating worksheet and correspondence for new business binders and assigns policy number
    • Review renewals with the exception of renewals with claims; rate and request missing information
    • Other duties as required


    Job Requirements

    • Bachelor degree from an accredited university in insurance, risk management or related field preferred.
    • Experience with Property and Casualty rating and underwriting.
    • Must carry a General Lines Property & Casualty License
    • Demonstrated skills in the use of computer systems and various software applications.
    • Demonstrated skills in collaboration and teamwork, communication (verbal and written), organizational and planning skills.
    • Analytical thinking and aptitude for evaluating and interpreting detailed information and data.
    • Ability to independently multi-task and respond to changing business priorities.
    • Demonstrated customer service experience and the ability to interact with a wide-variety of people on a daily basis in person, via telephone and email.
    • Insurance regulatory and technical knowledge.
    • Ability to work in a fast paced environment.
