  • Job Summary

    Responsible for the review of insurance applications for assigned line of business and assessment of financial risks by applying standard guidelines. Functions as front line representative, responding to questions from agents and customers.

    Essential Functions

    1. Underwrites new policies; reinstates and/or cancels existing policies.
    2. Reviews applications for insurance coverage, CLUE and credit reports, and other information to determine application acceptability for assigned line of business.
    3. Evaluates the experience of a risk against the class of business and determines the loss potential due to catastrophe, severity and/or frequency, using established guidelines.
    4. Rates new policies according to established guidelines and checks previously rated policies for proper rating.
    5. Answers questions from agents, policyholders, and applicants.
    6. Assists agents with comments or questions about applications.
    7. Issues and revises binders.
    8. Reviews requests for policy changes.
    9. Issues determinations to decline applications for unacceptable risk.
    10. Processes ACH payments.
    11. Prepares quotes.
    12. Provides guidance and information to co-workers as needed.
    13. Works with Accounting and other office staff members to provide guidance and offer assistance.
    14. Works with agents to provide information and facilitate application consideration and approval process.
    15. Performs other duties as necessary.

    Job Requirements

    • College degree in business management, marketing or related field preferred
    • One year of experience working in an underwriting team
    • Must have a P&C license with the Texas Department of Insurance
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a customer service mindset; ability to handle confidential information appropriately
    • Effective organization skills and attention to detail
    • Ability follow through on responsibilities and requests to completion
    • Strong critical thinking, analytical, and decision-making skills
    • Ability to assess and respond to identified needs easily, quickly, and accurately; ability to identify, investigate and resolve issues
    • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks concurrently
    • Strong computer skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office or comparable software applications
    • Ability to independently prepare reports and write business correspondence
